GEOLOGY PART 1

Which layer of Earth is the outer most, thinnest layer made of mostly rock? Crust
What layer of the Earth is the thickest? Mantle
What occurs in the mantle? Convection currents
What is the inner core? layer of Earth is extremely hot but is a solid ball of iron and nickel? Dense ball of solid metal.
What is the continental drift theory? The theory that the continents were once all together (Pangaea) and have broken apart and drifted away from each other over millions of years.
The older the crust is, What does this show? The further away from the mid-ocean ridges you get. continents have spread apart over millions of years.
The movement of tectonic plates might cause magma to form what? newer crust at plate boundaries.
What is the plate tectonics theory? Earth’s crust is broken into pieces and moves in different directions because of the convection currents in the mantle.
Where was Antarctica located according to fossil evidence? Closer to the equator
How did the fossils provide evidence for the continental drift theory? Fossils have been found on two continents that are currently far apart.
Which core is liquid? Outer Core
Which fossils are the oldest? The ones farthest underground.
What is a Divergent Boundary? When tectonic plates move apart,(dividing)magma comes to the surface from the mantle and cools, creating a new crust. Sea floor spreads
What is Convergent Boundary? When tectonic plates collide, mountains and/or volcanoes are created. Mountain ranges
How does Earthquakes and faults occur? When transform plates slide past each other.
What happens during a Oceanic divergent boundary? Seafloor spreads very slowly over long periods of time.
Volcanoes, mountain ranges, seafloor spreading are all caused by the movement of what? Tectonic plates.
What is the name of Alfred Wegeners theory of continents separating due to tectonics plates moving? Continental Drift
What do we call pieces of crust that move above the mantle? Tectonic plates.
If seafloor is spreading, where is the newer rock found? Near the ridge
What drives Continental Drift on the Earth? Convection currents in the mantle
Which boundary does subduction occur? and what is it? Convergent. Collide and one is punched under the mantle.
In seafloor spreading, where is the older rock found? away from the ridge
Seafloor spreading occurs when 2 plates are moving away from each other creating ridges
Seafloor spreading is a process that occurs at mid ocean ridges

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
