A-Level Greek

Odyssey 16: 351-375

TermDefinition
οὔ πω πᾶν εἴρηθ᾽, ὅτ᾽ ἄρ᾽ Ἀμφίνομος ἴδε νῆα, στρεφθεὶς ἐκ χώρης, λιμένος πολυβενθέος ἐντός, But before everything was said, Amphinomus, turning in his place, saw a ship in the deep harbour,
ἡδὺ δ᾽ ἄρ᾽ ἐκγελάσας μετεφώνεεν οἷς ἑτάροισι: and men furling the sail and having oars in their hands. And having laughed out loud sweetly, he spoke among them:
"Let us not send a message anymore: for they are here. Either some god told them this, or they saw his ship sailing by, but were not able to catch the ship."
So he spoke, and having stood up they went to the shore of the sea, and immediately they drew up the black ship swiftly, and proud servants carried away the weapons for them.
And they went to the assembly together, not allowing anyone else to sit with them, neither young men nor old men.
And Antinous, son of Eupeithes, spoke: "Tut tut, as such the gods have saved this man from ruin.
ἤματα μὲν σκοποὶ ἷζον ἐπ᾽ ἄκριας ἠνεμοέσσας αἰὲν ἐπασσύτεροι: ἅμα δ᾽ ἠελίῳ καταδύντι Spies sat upon the windy peaks every day, one after one: and when the sun set
οὔ ποτ᾽ ἐπ᾽ ἠπείρου νύκτ᾽ ἄσαμεν, ἀλλ᾽ ἐνὶ πόντῳ νηῒ θοῇ πλείοντες ἐμίμνομεν Ἠῶ δῖαν, We did not sleep on the shore at night, but sailing in our swift ship in the sea we waited for divine dawn,
Τηλέμαχον λοχόωντες, ἵνα φθίσωμεν ἑλόντες αὐτόν: τὸν δ᾽ ἄρα τῆος ἀπήγαγεν οἴκαδε δαίμων, to ambush Telemachus, so that we might capture him and kill him: but, meanwhile, a deity led him away to home,
But let us now devise a wretched death for Telemachus, lest he escape from under us: for I know that while he lives we cannot accomplish our goals.
For he is wise in counsel and in mind, and the people no longer show us favour at all.
