Cell Organells
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleus | The structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes |
| Ribosomes | The cellular machinery responsible for making proteins |
| Cytoplasm | To transport, maintain cell shape and structure, protect, store macromolecules and act as the host to metabolic processes |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | A network of membranes inside a cell through which proteins and other molecules move |
| Cell membrane | Found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment |
| Golgi apparatus | A factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destinations: lysosomes, the plasma membrane, or secretion |
| Mitrochondria | Generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | To produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function |
| Vacuoles | Help sequester waste products |
| Lysosomes | Membrane-enclosed organelles that contain an array of enzymes capable of breaking down all types of biological polymers—proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids |
