Cell Organells

TermDefinition
Nucleus The structure in a cell that contains the chromosomes
Ribosomes The cellular machinery responsible for making proteins
Cytoplasm To transport, maintain cell shape and structure, protect, store macromolecules and act as the host to metabolic processes
Endoplasmic reticulum A network of membranes inside a cell through which proteins and other molecules move
Cell membrane Found in all cells and separates the interior of the cell from the outside environment
Golgi apparatus A factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destinations: lysosomes, the plasma membrane, or secretion
Mitrochondria Generate most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions
Endoplasmic reticulum To produce proteins for the rest of the cell to function
Vacuoles Help sequester waste products
Lysosomes Membrane-enclosed organelles that contain an array of enzymes capable of breaking down all types of biological polymers—proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids
