electricty A form of energy made by moving electric charges.
strip mining Removing layers of soil and rock to get minerals near the surface.
surface mining Taking minerals or rocks from the Earth’s surface instead of underground.
petroleum A thick, oily liquid found underground that can be made into fuels like gasoline.
petrochemicals Chemicals made from petroleum or natural gas, used to make plastics and other products.
oil sands A mixture of sand, water, clay, and bitumen that can be processed to make oil.
oil shales Rocks that contain a solid oil-like substance that can be heated to produce oil.
methane hydrate Ice-like crystals under the ocean or in permafrost that trap methane gas
acid drained Acidic water that forms when minerals in rocks react with air and water, often from mining.
energy conservation Using less energy by reducing waste or using it more wisely.
nuculer energy Energy released from the nucleus of an atom
nuculer fission The process of splitting an atom’s nucleus to release energy.
nuculer reactor A machine that controls nuclear fission to produce energy.
meltdown A serious accident where the fuel in a nuclear reactor gets too hot and melts.
nuculear wastrel Radioactive materials left over after using nuclear fuel.
nuculear fussion The process of joining two atomic nuclei to release energy.
