TermDefinition
Agenda Setting: The media’s role in deciding which issues are important enough to be discussed by the public.
Watchdog (Fourth Estate): The media's role in monitoring the government and sounding the alarm on corruption.
Prior Restraint: The government’s attempt to prevent information from being published (rarely allowed).
Libel: Written defamation (false information) that damages a reputation.
Framing: Shaping how a story is told to influence the audience's interpretation.
Priming: Preparing or "priming" the audience's mind to have a specific view on a topic before they hear the main facts.
Conglomerate: A massive corporation that owns many different media outlets.
Soft News: News presented in an entertaining, often celebrity-focused or comedic style.
Externality An unintended consequence or side effect of a media policy or report.
FCC: The Federal Communications Commission, which regulates broadcast airwaves (TV/radio).
Media Functions: Understand the media’s role in informing the public, setting the agenda, and acting as a watchdog.
Transparency Laws Know why we have laws like "Sunshine Laws" and "Public Disclosure"—their goal is to keep government operations open and transparent to the citizens.
Media Evolution: Be able to identify the shift from partisan papers to neutral broadcast news to modern digital media.
Concept The "Clue" to look for in the Scenario
Agenda Setting The media is deciding what to show (and what to hide).
Priming The media is "warming up" the audience with background info.
Watchdog The media is "busting" someone (exposing corruption).
Framing The media is "spinning" a story to favor one side or another.
Yellow Journalism The media is "exaggerating" or "sensationalizing" just to sell copies.
