benefits Compensation and services beyond regular wages or salary, such as health insurance, paid time off, retirement plans, bonuses, and tuition assistance. Benefit packages vary by employer and can significantly affect a worker's total compensation.
body language Non-verbal communication expressed through posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye contact.
collective bargaining The process by which workers, often through unions, negotiate with employers on work conditions, pay, and benefits.
company culture The shared values, beliefs, attitudes, and practices that characterize a workplace.
cover letter A document sent with a résumé that explains an applicant’s interest in the job and highlights relevant experience and skills.
informational interview A meeting with a professional to learn about their career path, company, or industry, not for a specific job opening.
interview A formal conversation where an employer evaluates a job applicant’s qualifications and fit for the position.
job description A written summary of the duties, responsibilities, and requirements of a job.
labor union A group representing workers in negotiations with employers over wages, benefits, and working conditions.
networking The process of connecting with others for advice, support, and job leads within a professional field.
reference A person who can speak positively about an applicant’s skills, character, and experience for a job.
résumé A written summary of a person’s work experience, education, and skills, used to apply for jobs.
transferrable skills Skills usable in many different jobs or industries, such as organization or communication.
work ethic A set of values showing dedication, responsibility, reliability, and effort at work.
work-life balance The practice of managing and allocating time effectively between work and personal life.
workers compensation Insurance providing financial support to workers injured on the job.
