Evolution

TermDefinition
Genetic Drift Random changes in allele frequencies that occur in small populations.
Survival of the fittest Where organisms are "better" suited for their environment and have adaptations that allow them to survive and reproduce.
Adaptation Inherited characteristics that increases an organism's chance of survival.
Charles Darwin Observed how the characteristics of plants and animals varied on different islands of the Galapagos.
Descent With Modification Says that "all" organisms are related to one another but "come with changes" from other species over time.
Immigration Movement of individuals "into" an area occupied by an existing population.
Fitness The ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment.
Natural Selection Where over generations changes in inherited characteristics increase a species' fitness in its environment.
Emigration Movement of individuals "out" of an area.
Artificial Selection Where nature provided the variation and man selected those variations that were useful or most liked.
Common Descent The principle that a single "tree of life" links all living things.
Evolution "Change over time" where modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms.
Homologous Structure A similar body part that comes from a common ancestor. Ex. (The bones of bat wings and the bones of the human hand).
On the Origin of Species Darwin's book published in 1859 about natural selection later called evolution.
Theory A well-supported testable explanation of phenomena that has occurred in the natural world?
Struggle for Existence Where members of each species compete for food, space, and other necessities of life.
Vestigial organ Small traces of ancestral structures that no longer function, like tiny legs on some snakes.
Fossil The preserved remains of ancient organisms.
