| Survival of the fittest | Where organisms are "better" suited for their environment and have adaptations that allow them to survive and reproduce. |
| Adaptation | Inherited characteristics that increases an organism's chance of survival. |
| Charles Darwin | Observed how the characteristics of plants and animals varied on different islands of the Galapagos. |
| Descent With Modification | Says that "all" organisms are related to one another but "come with changes" from other species over time. |
| Immigration | Movement of individuals "into" an area occupied by an existing population. |
| Fitness | The ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| Natural Selection | Where over generations changes in inherited characteristics increase a species' fitness in its environment. |
| Emigration | Movement of individuals "out" of an area. |
| Artificial Selection | Where nature provided the variation and man selected those variations that were useful or most liked. |
| Common Descent | The principle that a single "tree of life" links all living things. |
| Evolution | "Change over time" where modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms. |
| Homologous Structure | A similar body part that comes from a common ancestor. Ex. (The bones of bat wings and the bones of the human hand). |
| On the Origin of Species | Darwin's book published in 1859 about natural selection later called evolution. |
| Theory | A well-supported testable explanation of phenomena that has occurred in the natural world? |
| Struggle for Existence | Where members of each species compete for food, space, and other necessities of life. |
| Vestigial organ | Small traces of ancestral structures that no longer function, like tiny legs on some snakes. |
| Fossil | The preserved remains of ancient organisms. |
