Blood Quiz

QuestionAnswer
Platelets They help your form scabs when you are bleeding. They are fragments of cells that stick to the edges of a wound.
Red blood cells They carry oxygen. They make up about 40% of your blood.
White blood cells They fight infections and trigger allergies.
Erythrocytes The scientific name for red blood cells.
Lymphocytes The scientific name for white blood cells.
Hemoglobin The protein that fills red blood cells. This protein is what carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
Plasma The fluid portion of the blood. It is mostly water with some dissolved nutrients, salts, and wastes.
Anemia A lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin. This leads to people feeling weak and tired.
Blood proteins They float around in the plasma and have several jobs. They help blood to clot and keep the amount of water in the blood consistent.
Electrolytes These are ions dissolved in the blood. Examples include Na, Cl, Ca, Mg, and K.
Nutrients in blood These are absorbed from food we eat. Examples include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Wastes in blood These are released by all cells and organs. Examples include urea, ammonia, and salts. They get released as urine.
Blood color changes Blood is bright red when it contains oxygen. It changes to dull blue when it loses oxygen.
Ventricle The thick, muscular chambers that form the bottom of the heart. They pump blood to the whole body.
Atrium The thin, weak chambers that form the top of the heart. They collect blood from the body and pass it to the lower chambers.
Aorta The largest blood vessel in the body. It connects to the heart.
Artery These blood vessels carry blood away from the heart towards all body parts.
Cappilaries The smallest blood vessels in the body. They allow oxygen and nutrients to pass from blood to cells.
Vein These blood vessels carry blood back towards the heart.
Jugular vein The blood vessel in the neck that carries blood down from the heard.
Cubital vein The blood vessel in the elbow where blood is often taken from and IVs are inserted.
Automatic External Defibrillator. This machine gives an electric shock to restart the heart. It is used when someone is having a heart attack.
ECG pattern This looks like a series of waves. It shows the electrical activity of the heart when muscles contract.
P wave The first little bump on an ECG pattern. It happens when the atria contract.
S wave The big spike on an ECG pattern. It happens when the ventricles contract.
Tissue examples Examples include dermis, epidermis, blood, muscle, and hypodermis.
Organ examples Examples include skin, stomach, liver, brain.
Body system examples Examples include the digestive system, nervous system, and reproductive system.
