College Vocab

TermDefinition
University Institution of highest learning. Has a college of liberal arts and a grad program. Is authorized to give out undergrad and grad degrees.
Community College nonresidential junior college established to serve a specific community and is funded by local government funds.
Admissions the office you apply to when sending your college applications
Undergraduate a student in a university or college who has not received a degree first
Graduate a student who already has a bachelor's degree or the first professional degree and is studying for an advanced degree
Tuition the charge or fee at a college, private school, or university
Credit a unit that measures learning at accredited colleges and universities
Major the specific area of study youre working on while at college
Minor the secondary area of study youre working on while at college
Bachelor's Degree The degree awarded by a college or university for completing their undergraduate studies
Associate's Degree The degree awarded by a junior or community college after completion or 2 years of study
Scholarship a sum of money or aid granted to another student because of merit, need, etc, to pursue their studies
Grant Something granted. As a privilege or right, a sum of money, or a tract of land.
FAFSA The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the form you need to fill out to get any financial aid from the federal government.
Financial Aid Support usually in the form of a loan or scholarship, that is used to pay for school, especially a higher education.
State University/College a college that is financially supported by the state government.
Liberal Arts The academic courses at the college. Intended to provide general knowledge and comprising of humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, and the arts.
Humanities English, History, religious studies, philosophy, and art history
Private University/College Colleges that rely heavily on tuition fees, donations, and endowments
Doctorate any of the degrees of the highest rank. Awarded by completing work in grad school or a professional school
Pre-requisite things that are required beforehand
teaching assistant A grad student in college or university has received a teaching fellowship. (TA)
Transfer Moving from college to another
Transcript the certified record of a student throughout a course of study having full enrollment history. Includes all courses taken, grades, and degrees and awards earned.
GPA The average off the values of your grades
Dean The head of a faculty, school, or administrative division in a college or university.
Room and Board room is your dorm or housing, and Board is your meal plan.
Dormitory the building you live in/your room is in at a college.
Semester Half of the year in college or university
