College Vocab terms for AVID.

TermDefinition
University an institution of learning of the highest level that's authorized to confer both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Community college a nonresidential junior college established to serve a specific community and supported by local government funds.
Admissions The office you apply to
Undergraduate A student in college who has not received a first degree
Graduate A student in college who has a bachelor's degree and is studying for an advanced degree.
Tuition The charge or fee for instruction
Credit A unit that measures learning
Major The specific area of study
Minor A secondary area of specialization
Bachelor's Degree A degree awarded to a person who has completed undergraduate studies.
Associate's Degree A degree awarded by a junior or community college.
Scholarship A sum of money or other aid granted to a student
Grant Something granted as privilege or right
FAFSA A form you fill out to get financial aid from the federal government
Financial Aid Monetary support as a loan or scholarship that is used to pay school
State University/College A college that is supported by the government
Liberal Arts The academic course of instruction at a college comprised of arts humanities natural sciences and social sciences
Humanities investigate literature, the past, culture, and human values
Private University/College Schools that rely on tuition fees.
Doctorate Any of several academic degrees of the highest rank
Prerequisite Required forehand
Registrar Register students, record grades, prepare transcripts, evaluate records, assess and collect tuition + fees.
Teaching assistant A student who is a recipient of a teaching fellowship
Transfer to withdraw and enter elsewhere
Transcript A certified record of a student
GPA A measure of scholastic attainment
Dean The H.O.F of college
Room and Board Room as your dorm, or housing.
Dormitory A building at a college that has a number of rooms for residents
Semester Half of the regular academic year.
