Parts of the Sun
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Core | This is the center layer of the Sun. It is the hottest region where nuclear reactions occur. |
| Radiation Zone | This zone is named for the way energy is moved through this layer. Energy from the core is carried outward in photons. |
| Convection Zone | This zone is named for the way energy is moved through this layer. Hot plasma moves upward and cools as it nears the surface. It then falls to be heated and rises again. |
| Photosphere | This is the inner layer of the Sun's atmosphere. It is the visible surface of the Sun (what you see) |
| Chromosphere | This is the lower part of the Sun's atmosphere. It comes from the Greek root word "chroma" meaning color, for it looks bright red during a solar eclipse |
| Corona | This is the uppermost layer part of the Sun's atmosphere. It is much hotter than the Sun's surface. |
| Sunspots | These are dark spots, cool areas that appear on the Sun's photosphere. They appear in pairs and are intense magnetic fields |
| Prominences (solar) | Clouds of gases from the chromosphere that rise along the magnetic lines from the sunspot pairs forming an arch |
| Solar flares | These are brief explosions of high energy radiation that come from sunspots |
