According to the text, how and why does Buck continue to steal? He realizes that stealing is a part of survival in the wild. He steals to stop his hunger. It is a way to adapt to his new life.
How does the attack by the wild dogs at the beginning of Chapter 3 build suspense in the story? When the wild dogs attack, they steal much of the food for the team, leaving a lot of uncertainty if the team will survive. Spitz uses the wild dog attack as an opportunity to attack Buck while he is distracted, building the tension between the two dogs.
Between Chapters 2 and 3, London has Spitz attack Buck on three separate occasions. What is the purpose of those three attacks? With each attack, Buck’s ability to be resilient is evident. The tension between Buck and Spitz builds with each attack, making each encounter more intense.
