TermDefinition
Atoms The tiny pieces that all matter - all the stuff in the world - is made of
Chemical Reaction A process in which atoms rearrange to form new substances
Organisms Living things, such as plants, animals, and bacteria
Metabolism The body's use of molecules for energy and growth
Phase A noticeably different form or state of the same substance
Model An object, diagram, or computer program that helps us understand somthing by making it simpler or easier to see
Scale The relative size of things
Glucose A molecule that organisms can use to release energy, and that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms
Temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is
Freedom of Movement The way molecules in a substance move around relative to each other
Refute To provide evidence that goes against a claim
Substance Something that is made up of all the same atoms or groups of atoms
Extended Structure A structure formed by repeating groups of atoms linked together in a large network
Molecule A group of atoms joined together in a particular way
Kinetic Energy The energy that an object has because it is moving
Product An ending substance that is made during a chemical reaction
Property Something that can be observed about a substance, such as color, smell, or boiling point
Reactant A starting substance that is a part of chemical reaction
Rearrange To change the order or position of something
Boiling Point The temperature at which a substance changes from the liquid phase to the gas phase
Chemical Formula Letters and numbers showing the types and numbers of atoms that repeat to make up a substance
Extended Structure A structure formed by repeating groups of atoms linked together in a large network
Melting Point The tempurature at which a substance changes from the solid phase to the liquid phase
Fertilizer A substance that is added to soil to help plants grow
Corrosive Able to cause damage
Bacteria Tiny organisms that are made of a single cell
Microorganisms An organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Cells Tiny structure that make up all living things and are the smallest units able to perform life functions
Microscopic Too small to be seen with the naked eye
Microbiome All of the microorganisms that live in a particular environment, such as a human body
Claim A proposed answer to a question about the natural world
Evidence Information about the natural world that is used to support or go against a claim
Scientific Argument A claim supported by evidence
Prokaryotic Smallest, simplest cells that make up single cell organism and lack a nucleus
Eukaryotic Cells containing specialized internal organelles
Nucleus The control center of the cell, holds the DNA
Mitochondria Bean shaped organelle that releases energy from glucose molecules for the cell to use
Cell Membrane Barrier around the cell that controls what goes in and out of the cell
Vacuole Large storage organelle found in plants, stores water, food, and sometimes waste
Chloroplast Organelles in plant cells that store chlorophyll where light energy is turned into glucose during photosynthesis
Organelle Membrane bound structures within the cell that have specific jobs
Cell Division When a parent duplicates it contents and then divides into 2 new cells
DNA ( deoxyribonucleic acid) Genetic information that is located in to nucleus, and is passed from parent to offspring
Ribosomes Organelle that makes protein for the cell
Cytoplasm Gel like substance that fills the cell
Oxygen A molecule that organisms get from the air or water around them and use to release energy
Amino Acids Molecules that are the buliding blocks of proteins
System A set of interacting parts forming a complex whole
Digestive System The body system that takes in food and breaks it down
Respiratory System The body system that takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
Circulatory System The body system that transports molecules to and from all cells of the body
Energy The ability to make things move or change
Protein A category of large molecules that perform inportant functions inside living things
Starch A type of energy storage molecule made of many glucose molecules connected together
Tissue A group of cells that work together to perform a specific job
Heart Muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
Arteries Blood vessels that carry oxygen rich blood from the heart to the body
Veins Blood vessels that return oxygen poor blood back to the heart
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where the exchange of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste occurs between the blood and the cells
Circulation Movement of blood through the heart and blood vessels, delivering oxygen & nutrients to the body, and removing waste products
Lungs Main organ of the respiratory system where gas exchange occurs
Diaphragm Muscular structure that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity and plays a key role in breathing
Alveoli Tiny air sacs in the lungs where the exchange of oxygen and corbon dioxide take place
Ingestion Process of taking food into the body
Digestion Process of breaking food down into it's smallest parts
Respiration Process by which oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is released by an organism
Excretion To remove waste
Homeostasis The body ability to maintain a stable environment, even when external conditions change
Voluntary You need to decide on the action (think it) before it happens, done by choice
Involuntary Happens without you thinking about doing it, occurs automatically
Smooth Muscle Type of muscle found in internal organs that operates involuntarily (you dont have to think about it, it just happens). Example the muscle that makes up the esophagus
Cardiac Muscle Type of muscle tissue that makes up the heart and operates involuntarily (you dont have to think about it for it to happen)
Cellular Respiration The chemical reaction between oxygen and glucose that release energy into cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
