Parts of the Stage
Vocabulary
| Question | Answer |

| Theatre | dramatic representation as an art or profession |
| Theater | a building or area for dramatic performances. |
| Proscenium Theater | Seating on one side. Characterized by the proscenium arch. |
| Thrust Stage | Also known as an “Open Stage” or “Platform Stage.” Seating on three sides. |
| Arena Theater | Also known as “Theater-in-the-Round” Seating on all four sides. |
| Black Box | Also known as a Studio Theatre. Adjustable seating: Thrust |
| Stage Directions | Directors use stage directions to tell their actors where to move on stage. |
| Body Positions | Your placement on stage: Full Front |
| Batton | A metal rod that holds up the curtains and/or lights. |
| Wings | The areas to side of the stage that serve as storage and as a place for actors to wait for their entrances. |
| Grand Drape | The main curtain. The curtain that seperates the house from the stage. |
| House | Where the audience sits. |
| Pit | The area inbetween the apron and the house in which the orchestra plays. |
| Apron | The part of the stage that extends beyond the grand drape into the house. |
