| The ears function | The main function of the ear is turning sound waves (air pressure) into electrical impulses sent to the brain. |
| Ear is divided into 3 parts | External, Middle, and Inner Ear |
| External Ear Consists Of ----> | Auricle (Pinna), external auditory meatus (Canal), and the tympanic membrane |
| Main Function of the External Ear | The main function is to collect sound waves (air pressure) and transmit them to the eardrum. The eardrum converts sound waves into mechanical energy. |
| Middle Ear Consists Of ----> | Malleus (Hammer), Incus (Anvil)< and the Stapes (Stirrup) |
| Main Function of the Middle Ear | The main function of the ossicles is to amplify the mechanical energy and send it to the oval window. The Auditory tube (Eustachian tube) connects the middle ear to the nasal cavity. |
| Inner Ear | Evolved from temporal bone and includes bony-walled passages such as: bony labyrinth, vestibule, semicircular canals and the cochlea. |
| Auditory System | The mechanical energy received from the middle ear to the oval window continues to a fluid system (perilymph), inside the bony cochlea. This perilymph transmits waves to a deeper endolymph fluid. |
| Vestibular System | Part of the inner ear, the bony semicircular canals contain an endolymph as well. Movement of that perilymph again acts on the endolymph to create the electrochemical signals that are sent to the brain. |
