DNA STRUCTURE

QuestionAnswer
DNA Deoxyribonucleic acid; molecule that stores genetic information in cells
Double Helix The twisted ladder shape of the DNA molecule
Nucleotide The basic unit of DNA made of a sugar, phosphate group, and nitrogen base
Nitrogen Base The part of a nucleotide that carries genetic information
Adenine (A) A nitrogen base that pairs with thymine in DNA
Thymine (T) A nitrogen base that pairs with adenine in DNA
Cytosine (C) A nitrogen base that pairs with guanine in DNA
Guanine (G) A nitrogen base that pairs with cytosine in DNA
Base Pair Two nitrogen bases bonded together in the center of DNA
Complementary Base Pairing The rule that A pairs with T and C pairs with G
Sugar-Phosphate Backbone The sides of the DNA ladder made of alternating sugar and phosphate
Deoxyribose The sugar molecule found in DNA nucleotides
Phosphate Group The molecule that links nucleotides together in the DNA backbone
Gene A segment of DNA that contains instructions to make a protein
Chromosome A tightly coiled structure of DNA found in the nucleus
Chromatin DNA loosely wrapped around proteins in the nucleus
Genome The complete set of genetic information in an organism
Watson and Crick Scientists who discovered the double helix structure of DNA
Rosalind Franklin Scientist whose X-ray images helped reveal DNA structure
Antiparallel The two DNA strands run in opposite directions
Hydrogen Bonds Weak bonds that hold nitrogen bases together
Helix A spiral shape formed by the DNA molecule

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
