Genes

QuestionAnswer
Traits Characteristics of an organism that define the organism
Punnett Square A chart used to predict the possible outcomes of offspring
Alleles Different forms of a gene that determine a specific trait like different versions of the same instructions
Dominant A trait that always shows up in a person even if they only have one copy of the gene for that trait like a strong voice that always gets heard
Recessive A trait that only shows up in a person if the have 2 copies of the gene for that trait like a quiet voice that only gets heard if there is no other voice around
Inherit To receive genes from your biological parents
Homozygous Inheriting identical gene versions (alleles) from both biological parents for a specific trait EX: AA
Variations Differences in traits of characteristics
Heterozygous Inheriting 2 different alleles for a specific gene, inheriting on dominant and one recessive gene from parents Ex: Aa
Hybrid Another word for heterozygous
Hereditary Genes passed down from biological parents causing traits, diseases, and characteristics
Phenotype Observable physical or behavioral traits that come from genes
Purebred Another word for homozygous
Genotype The specific genetic makeup or DNA sequence an organism inherits
Sex-linked traits Genetic characteristics controlled by genes located on sex chromosomes. Most of these genes are x-linked and mean that the gene is only found on the X chromosome, not the Y
Incomplete Dominance The dominant allele is not completely expressed when the recessive allele is present so like a blend of both parents phenotypes
Mendelian Genetics Inheritance where traits are determined by a single gene with dominant and recessive alleles
Co-dominance Inheriting both alleles in a heterozygous organism both expressed at the same time in the phenotype rather than one being dominant or recessive

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
