| οὕνεκα Τηλέμαχος μὲν ἐπ᾽ ἀγροῦ, νῆα δ᾽ ἀνώγει ἄστυδ᾽ ἀποπλείειν, ἵνα μὴ δείσασ᾽ ἐνὶ θυμῷ ἰφθίμη βασίλεια τέρεν κατὰ δάκρυον εἴβοι | That Telemachus was in the field, and he ordered the ship to sail away towards the city, lest the strong queen fear in her heart and shed a delicate tear. |
| τὼ δὲ συναντήτην κῆρυξ καὶ δῖος ὑφορβὸς τῆς αὐτῆς ἕνεκ᾽ ἀγγελίης, ἐρέοντε γυναικί. | And the herald and the divine swineherd met together on account of the same message, to tell the woman. |
| ἀλλ᾽ ὅτε δή ῥ᾽ ἵκοντο δόμον θείου βασιλῆος, κῆρυξ μέν ῥα μέσῃσι μετὰ δμῳῇσιν ἔειπεν: ‘ἤδη τοι, βασίλεια, φίλος πάϊς εἰλήλουθε.' | And when they arrived at the house of the divine king, the herald spoke in the midst of the maids: "Now indeed, queen, your dear son has arrived." |
| Πηνελοπείῃ δ᾽ εἶπε συβώτης ἄγχι παραστὰς πάνθ᾽ ὅσα οἱ φίλος υἱὸς ἀνώγει μυθήσασθαι. | And the swineherd, standing near by, told Penelope as many things her dear son had ordered him to tell. |
| αὐτὰρ ἐπεὶ δὴ πᾶσαν ἐφημοσύνην ἀπέειπε, βῆ ῥ᾽ ἴμεναι μεθ᾽ ὕας, λίπε δ᾽ ἕρκεά τε μέγαρόν τε. | But when he had spoken away all of the commands, he went to go among the swine, and he left both the courtyard and the palace. |
| μνηστῆρες δ᾽ ἀκάχοντο κατήφησάν τ᾽ ἐνὶ θυμῷ, ἐκ δ᾽ ἦλθον μεγάροιο παρὲκ μέγα τειχίον αὐλῆς, αὐτοῦ δὲ προπάροιθε θυράων ἑδριόωντο. | But the suitors were dismayed and downcast in their hearts, and they went out of the palace beyond the great wall of the court, and there they sat in front of the doors. |
| τοῖσιν δ᾽ Εὐρύμαχος, Πολύβου πάϊς, ἦρχ᾽ ἀγορεύειν: ‘ὦ φίλοι, ἦ μέγα ἔργον ὑπερφιάλως τετέλεσται Τηλεμάχῳ ὁδὸς ἥδε: φάμεν δέ οἱ οὐ τελέεσθαι. | And Eurymachus, son of Polybus, began to speak to them: "O' friends, in truth a great deed has incidentally been accomplished by Telemachus on this journey; and we said it would not be accomplished by him. |
| ἀλλ᾽ ἄγε νῆα μέλαιναν ἐρύσσομεν ἥ τις ἀρίστη, ἐς δ᾽ ἐρέτας ἁλιῆας ἀγείρομεν, οἵ κε τάχιστα κείνοις ἀγγείλωσι θοῶς οἶκόνδε νέεσθαι.' | But come, let us launch a black ship, one which is the best, and let us gather rowers and seamen, so that they might announce to those men to return home as swiftly as possible." |
