Percents
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Commission | A fee paid for services, usually a percentage of cost. |
| Percent | a special ratio that means “per hundred” or percent/100. |
| Discount | A price reduction. Sometimes given as a dollar amount OR in percent, such as a 10% discount. When given a percent you need to do a calculation to find the price reduction. |
| Tax | Money the government collects based on income, sales, and other activities. Sales tax is given in a percent, so you need to do a calculation to find the amount of tax paid. |
| Tip | Money given to someone who provides a service. It is based on a percent of money spent, so you need to do a calculation to find the amount of a tip. |
| Calculating Discount | subtracted from original price |
| Calculating Tax/Tip | Added to the original price |
| Example of Discount | James bought a pair of shoes originally priced at $30. They were on sale for 15% off. |
| Example of Tax | Steve goes shopping and buys a $20 shirt with 8% sales tax. |
| Example of Tip | Sophia leaves a 25% tip on a $35 meal. |
| Example of Commission | Thomas earns 3% commission on car sales. He sells $50,000 in cars. How much does he make in commission? |
