functions of skeletal muscle

QuestionAnswer
functions of skeletal muscle posture, movement, heat production, fatigue
movement- muscles pull on bones as muscles contract
movement occurs at joint between origin and insertion
groups of muscles usually contract to produce ONE movement
prime main
synergist helps prime and may add force and reduce unwanted movement
antagonist opposite of prime
tonic contraction (muscle tone ) let's us maintain body position, no movement, maintain posture
only few muscle fibers - muscle tone can shorten at one time
posture holds body parts in position
skeletal muscle tone keeps good posture by counteracting gravity
contraction of muscle fibers makes most heat
normal body temp. 98.6
fever 100.4
hypothermia dangerously cold
what depends on body temp enzymes and organs
fatigue reduced strength of muscle contraction
fatigue can be caused by repeated muscle stimulation without rest and repeated muscle stimulation depletes atp
muscle contraction without adequate o2 makes lactic acid which makes muscles sore
lactic acid anerobic respiration
atp aerobic (normal) respiration
oxygen debt metabolic effort required to burn excess lactic acid that builds up during prolonged periods of exercise
labored breathing required to " pay debt " and adds atp
inc metabolism helps restore energy
o2 is used to get rid of built up lactic acid
