structure of skeletal muscle

QuestionAnswer
muscle organs mainly striated muscle fibers and connective tissue
skeletal muscle has more than 1 kind of tissue
connective tissue in skeletal muscle forms wrappers around each muscle fiber, fascicles, and around fascia and surrounds muscle organs and nearby structures
helps connect muscle to bone and keeps fibers organized connective tissue in skeletal muscle
fascicles groups of muscle/ bundles of muscle fibers
fascia connective tissue layer
most skeletal muscles extends from 2 bones and across a joint
origin attaches 2 bones, doesn't move alot
insertion moves when muscle contracts
body thick part where major movement happens
muscles attach to bone by tendons, and it helps prevent tearing
tendons strong cords or sheets of fibrous connective tissue that extends from muscle organ
some tendons are enclosed in .... tendon sheaths (synovial lined tubes) and are lubricated by synovial fluid
when a muscle contracts the _______ moves towards _______ insertion moves towards origin
bursae definition small synovial lined sacs with small amount of synovial fluid and are located between some tendons and underlying bones
bursae cont... reduced friction between tissues, located between skin, bones and muscle, bones
muscle fibers long cylinder that makes skeletal muscles parallel and helps pull in same direction
connective tissue holds muscle fibers in parallel groupings
myosin thick, pulling protein
actin thin, myosin pulls actin causing muscle fibers to shorten
muscle contraction myosin pulls actin
basic functional (contractile ) unit sarcomere
sarcomere is separated by dark bands called z lines
sliding filament thick and thin myofilaments slide past each other to contract and filaments don't shrink, just slide
contraction needs - calcium and atp
