What happened to Solomon's kingdom? Solomon’s kingdom was divided into Judah which is the northern kingdom, and Israel which was the southern kingdom.

Who became king of the Northern Kingdom (Israel) (10 tribes)? Jeroboam
Why did the northern tribes say "no" to the southern king? He put heavy burdens on them.
What did the first northern king set up (golden things) to stop people going to Jerusalem? A great golden Bull and an altar
Define idolatry from the book Giving worship to a creature or thing instead of God.
Both first kings failed by letting people: They both led people away from God.
~922 B.C. Solomon dies and then the kingdom splits in two.
Ahab & Jezebel Ahab marries Jezebel and she builds a Baal temple and kills true believers of God.
~850 B.C. King Ahab dies in battle. He had let God’s people away from their covenant with God.
~842 B.C. Jehu drives out the worship of false gods.
~801 B.C. Jeroboam II's "golden age" - Jehoash took the throne as king. His reign seemed to begin a period of power prosperity unknown since the days of Solomon. He regained lost land in the north and established peace with the southern kingdom.
~746 B.C. (Jeroboam II dies) - Israelites power and prosperity vanished. This downfall was due to the rise of new power- the nation of Assyria.
~735 B.C. Ahaz aligns with the Assyrians for protection.
724 B.C. The king of Assyria attacked Israel and took over the countryside. He took the king of Israel prisoner and occupied all of the land except for Samaria, the capital city.
~721 B.C. Assyria conquers Israel; deports Israelites as slaves. The ten lost tribes.
King Ahab North - He died in battle
Solomon North - Built a temple in Jerusalem
Jeroboam North - He led the people into idolatry
Jehoash North - His reign began a period of power and prosperity
Jeroboam II North - Israel regained lost land land in the north and established peace with the southern kingdom
Who was Ahab's wife? Jezebel
What god did Jezebel push? Baal
What did she do to God's followers? Ahab allowed Jezebel to kill hundreds of people who believed in God.
Rehoboam South - He announced heavy taxes among the people (bad)
Abijah South - He permitted the worship of false gods (bad)
Asa South - Only followers of the one true God were allowed to be officials in the government (good)
Jehoshaphat South - firmly believed in God and acted to bring the people back to faithfulness to God (good)
Ahaz South - Judah had to give up its independence and pledge loyalty to Assyria (bad)
Hezekiah South - Removed foreign idols from the temple and destroyed the shrines were false gods and goddesses had been worshiped (good)
What did one good king do to the Temple & poor? King Hezekiah removed foreign idols from the temple and destroyed the shrines where false gods and goddesses were worshiped. He also helped the poor and those who suffered because of the many injustices in Judah.
Elijah's background Prophet - God sent him to the Northern Kingdom. He lived during the reign of King Ahab.
Elijah's message His message called the people to faith in the one true God.
Elisha's background Prophet- Anointed by Elijah. Elijah threw his cloak over her as a sign that he was called to the mission of a prophet.
Elisha's message Elijah and Elisha’s works show that the power of a prophet comes from the one true God. God is loving and faithful even when they are not faithful to him.
Amos' background Prophet - Amos was a shepherd who lived during the reign of Jeroboam II. He was from the Southern kingdom but God called him to preach in the Northern Kingdom.
Amos' message Amos insisted that Israel’s only hope of salvation was to act justly. He reminded people that they must show what was in their hearts.
Hosea's background Prophet - Story is about his love for and marriage to a woman named Gomer. Gomer was not faithful to Hosea, just as the Israelites were not faithful to God. Despite Gomer’s unfaithfulness, Hosea loved her so much that he could not give up on her.
Hosea's message Hosea told the people that God felt the same way about Israel: God refused to abandon Israel even though its people had been unfaithful to him.
Isaiah (of Jerusalem) background Prophet - Preached to Judah during the time that it was under Assyria’s control. He was one of King Ahaz’s advisors.
Isaiah (of Jerusalem) message Reminded the king and the people of God’s love for them. He preached that Judah and Israel would lose their freedom.
Micah's background Prophet - Began his work around the time of Isaiah of Jerusalem. He was angered by the sinful actions of the people.
Micah's message Goodness lies in the practice of social justice and in faithfulness to God. He assured people that God would not abandon his Chosen People. God would welcome his people back and forgive their sins. He would restore them through the work of a New David.
What did all these prophets call for? All of these prophets called for the people to follow the one true God.
Where was Assyria from? Northern Mesopotamia
What happened in 724 B.C.? The King of Assyria attacked Israel and took over the countryside. He took the king of Israel prisoner and occupied the land except for Samaria, the capital.
When/What fell in ~721 B.C.? Assyria conquered Israel
What did Assyria do to Israelites? Over 27,000 were deported and never heard from again. They were known as the 10 lost tribes of Israel.
Big Lesson from Israel's fall: Sinfulness does not lead to life. Faithfulness to God and to one another is necessary for living as God calls us to live.
Despite unfaithfulness, God was always: Forgiving
Prophets show God’s love like: Preaching out to others
