6s: Astronomy Part 1

TermDefinition
Big Bang Theory A theory that the universe began 13.8 billion years ago from a single point.
Evidence of the Big Bang Theory 1. Hubble's Law 2. Left over radiation 3. It is still expanding
Rotation When an object spins on its axis. Earth’s rotation creates day and night (24 hours).
Revolution When an object in space as it goes around another object. Earth revolves around the Sun once every 365.25 days, creating one year!
Gravity The invisible force of attraction between objects. Gravity depends upon an object's own mass, as well as its distance to another object.
Earth Earth is the planet we live on which revolves around the Sun (1 year) and rotates on its axis every 24 hours (1 day)
Sun The Sun is the only star in our solar system. The Sun has the most mass which means it has the most gravity in our Solar System.
Solar System A solar system is an area in outer space in which all of the objects revolve around a star.
Galaxy A Galaxy is a group/system of stars and solar systems held together by gravity.
Universe A Universe is a collection of all the planets, stars, solar systems, and galaxies.
Why do we have seasons? 1. The Earth is tilted on it's axis. 2. The Earth revolves around the Sun.
Summer in the Northern Hemisphere Earth is tilted towards the Sun receiving more direct sun rays making it warmer.
Winter in the Northern Hemisphere Earth is tilted away from the Sun receiving less direct sun rays making it colder.
Why does Earth experinece day and night? Because of it's rotation towards and away from the Sun.
How long does one rotation of Earth take? 24 hours
How long does it take Earth to revolve around the Sun? 1 year

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
