Agribusiness The commercial business of agriculture.
Baby Boom A significant increase in the birthrate.
Brinkmanship The practice of pushing a conflict to the edge of violence without getting into a war, usually as a tactic to gain a favorable outcome.
Bulwark Something that provides protection or defense.
Consumerism A theory stating that the economy flourishes when people buy, or consume, a lot of goods and services.
Consumer Society A society in which shopping and buying goods has become an important part of people's lifestyles.
Covert Action An activity performed secretly to influence the political, economic, or military situation in another country.
Domesticity Life inside the home.
Frostbelt The north-central and northeastern regions of the United States, which have cold winters.
Homogeneity The state of being the same or similar.
Interstate Highway System The network of highways launched by President Eisenhower in 1956 to span the United States and connect states and major cities.
Nuclear Deterrence A strategy of using nuclear weapons as a threat to ward off an enemy attack.
Nuclear Power Energy that is created by either splitting or fusing the nuclei of atoms.
Smog A noxious combination of fog and smoke from factories.
Subdivision A tract of land that has been divided into smaller lots on which houses are built.
Suburbanization A population shift from cities to outlying communities.
Sunbelt The southern and southwestern region of the United States, which have mild winters.
Transistor An electronic device used to control the flow of electricity in electronic equipment.
Poverty Rate The percentage of the population living in poverty.
Urban Renewal A program that involves clearing slums and replacing them with large, publicly funded housing projects.
