Asthma A condition where airways become inflamed and narrow, making breathing difficult
Punctured Lung A collapsed lung caused by air entering the chest cavity
Pulmonary Fibrosis : Lung disease where lung tissue becomes scarred and stiff
Pulmonary Edema Fluid buildup in the lungs that makes breathing difficult
Hyperventilate Breathing very fast and deeply, often lowering carbon dioxide levels
Diffusion Movement of gases from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Inspiration The act of breathing air into the lungs
Expiration The act of breathing air out of the lungs
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths taken per minute
Pulse Oximetry A test that measures oxygen levels in the blood
Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) The fastest speed air can be blown out of the lungs
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Measurement of how quickly a person can exhale
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) Amount of air exhaled forcefully in one second
Bronchodilator Medication that relaxes and opens the airways
Upper Respiratory Tract The airways above the lungs including nose and throat
Larynx Voice box that connects the pharynx to the trachea
Pharynx Throat passage that carries air from the nose to the larynx
Nasal Cavity Hollow space inside the nose that filters and warms air
Lower Respiratory Tract Airways that carry air into the lungs
Bronchi Two main branches of the trachea leading to the lungs
Bronchioles Small branches of bronchi inside the lungs
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs
Trachea Windpipe that carries air from the larynx to the bronchi
Lungs Organs where gas exchange occurs
Right Superior Lobe Upper section of the right lung
Right Medial Lobe Middle section of the right lung
Right Inferior Lobe Lower section of the right lung
Left Superior Lobe Upper section of the left lung
Left Inferior Lobe Lower section of the left lung
Horizontal Fissure Groove that separates the right upper and middle lung lobes
Oblique Fissure Groove separating lung lobes in both lungs
Diaphragm Dome-shaped muscle that controls breathing
Cartilaginous Rings Rings of cartilage that keep the trachea open
Epiglottis Flap that prevents food from entering the airway
Respiratory Zone Area of the lungs where gas exchange occurs
Conducting Zone Airways that move air to the respiratory zone
