TermDefinition
Cardiac Relating to the heart.
Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and waste are exchanged with tissues.
Venules Small blood vessels that collect blood from capillaries and carry it to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Structures that prevent blood from flowing backward
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope
Tunica Externa The outer layer of a blood vessel that provides protection and support.
Tunica Media The middle muscular layer of a blood vessel that controls vessel diameter.
Tunica Interna The inner smooth layer of a blood vessel that blood flows across.
Lumen The hollow inside space of a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation The movement of blood between the heart and lungs.
Systemic Circulation The movement of blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
Right Atrium The upper right chamber of the heart that receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve The valve between the right atrium and right ventricle.
Right Ventricle The lower right chamber that pumps blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar/Pulmonic Valve The valve between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.
Pulmonary Artery The artery that carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins The veins that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Left Atrium The upper left chamber that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve The valve between the left atrium and left ventricle.
Left Ventricle The lower left chamber that pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Aortic Semilunar/Aortic Valve The valve between the left ventricle and the aorta.
Aorta The largest artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body.
Chordae Tendineae Tendon-like cords that attach valves to papillary muscles.
Septum The wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Ridges of muscle lining the ventricles.
Papillary Muscles Muscles that tighten the chordae tendineae to prevent valve prolapse.
Apex The pointed bottom tip of the heart.
Base The top part of the heart where major vessels connect.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main artery supplying blood to the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery . Branch of the left coronary artery that supplies the front of the heart.
Circumflex Artery Branch of the left coronary artery that wraps around the heart.
Right Coronary Artery Artery that supplies blood to the right side of the heart.
Carotid Artery Major artery that supplies blood to the brain and head.
Descending Aorta The downward portion of the aorta supplying the lower body.
Subclavian Artery Artery that supplies blood to the arms and upper body.
Brachiocephalic Trunk First branch of the aortic arch supplying the right arm and head.
Axillary Artery Artery located in the armpit region supplying the upper limb.
Brachial Artery Main artery of the upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on the thumb side of the forearm
Ulnar Artery Artery on the pinky side of the forearm.
Iliac Artery Arteries that supply blood to the pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Major artery supplying blood to the thigh and leg.
Popliteal Artery Artery located behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on the top of the foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery behind the ankle supplying the foot.
Jugular Vein Major vein that drains blood from the head and neck.
Brachiocephalic Vein . ein that drains blood from the head and arms into the superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Vein that drains blood from the upper limbs.
Axillary Vein Vein in the armpit region that drains the arm.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on the thumb side of the arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in the elbow commonly used for blood draws.
Basilic Vein uperficial vein on the inner side of the arm.
Iliac Vein Veins that drain blood from the pelvis and legs.
Femoral Vein Major Major vein that drains blood from the thigh.
Popliteal Vein Vein located behind the knee.
Greater Saphenous Vein Long superficial vein running along the inner leg.
