| Term | Definition |

| Roots | Soaks up vitamins and minerals; also stores food for the plant |
| Leaves | Make food (sugar) for the plant; also takes in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen into the air |
| Stem | Supports the plant; has many thin tubes to carry water, minerals, and food through the plant |
| Flower | Part of the plant that makes seeds |
| Fruit | Some plants have this; helps protect and hold seeds; many animals eat it which can help seeds spread |
| Chlorophyll | Green pigment found in plant leaves; helps the plant to make food |
| Photosynthesis | Process plants use to make food; plant turns sunlight, chlorophyll, and carbon dioxide into food (sugar) and oxygen |
| Sugar | Type of food that plants make in their leaves; also called glucose |
| Oxygen | Type of gas (air) given off during photosynthesis; people and animals need it to breathe |
| Carbon dioxide | Type of gas needed by plants for photosynthesis; plants use it up and produce oxygen; people and animals create much of this |
