Cells

TermDefinition
Nucleus Contains DNA and is the control center of the cell. Its one of the largest organelles. Materials pass into and out of it through pores in the nuclear envolpe
Chloroplast In plant cells the sites where photosynthesis take place in a plant cell.
Mitochondria Converts energy stored in food to energy the can use to live and function
Ribosomes Functions as factories that make proteins for the cell can attach to ER can float around in cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum Structures that look like a maze. A network of folded membranes that move materials throughout the cell
Golgi Body When proteins leave ER they go to the Golgi body is the site where proteins are packaged and distributed
Lysosomes Organelles that contain chemicals which digest waste products and worn out cell parts. Releases material that can be used again
Vacuole Storage part of a cell. Acts as temporary storage center- stores water, food, and other materials needed by a cell
Cell are the smallest/basic unit of life that conducts all life functions. Cells vary in size and shape but contain most of the same parts Bacteria are the smallest organisms made of 1 cell
Cell Discovery The first cells from an organism were observed by Robert Hooke in the 1600s. Soon after microscopist van Leeuwenhoek observed many other living cells.
Cell Theory All living things are composed of 1 or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure & function in living things, new cells are produced
organelle tiny cell structures that carries out specif functions within the cell
Cell Wall Ridgid layer surrounding plant cells and some other organisms (but not animal cells)
Cell Membrane The thin, flexible barrier surrounding the cell.
Cytoplasm the clear gel like fluid inside of a cell made out of mostly water and some salt.
Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplast, plants use sunlight , carbon dioxide and water to make simpler sugars, plant cells release oxygen once the sugars are formed, they are either used by the plant or stored in vacuoles.
Respiration occurs in the mitocondria of the cells the cell uses energy to build, repaired, & reproduce cells
Waste Elimination organisms get rid of waste that can be harmful to the cell this occurs in lysosomes
Mitosis is cell reproduction that occurs in nucleus of the cell it enables to make an exact copy of itself

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
