A&P Chapter 2 S1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that occupies space and has mass |
| Element | A pure substance that cannot be created or broken down by ordinary chemical means |
| Atom | Smallest quantity of an element that maintains the element's unique properties |
| Proton | Positively charged particles. The number of these in an atom's nucleus determines the element |
| Neutron | Non-charged particles that, combined with protons, give mass to the atom |
| Electron | Negatively charged particles that circle atoms at almost the speed of light. They are equal in number to the amount of protons |
| Atomic Number | The number of protons in an atom's nucleus |
| Mass Number | The sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus |
| Isotope | A distinct form of an element which differs by the number of neutrons |
| Radioisotope | An isotope who's nucleus readily decays, spewing subatomic particles and electromagnetic energy |
| Compound | Substance composed of two or more elements bound by chemical means |
| Electron Shell | Layer of electrons that surround the nucleus at a distinct energy level |
| Valence Shell | An atom's outermost electron shell |
