| confederation | A loose alliance of countries, states, and other political units in which each unit maintains most or all power over itself |
| ratify | To give formal approval to something so it can become legal or valid |
| decentralize | To spread out power or control rather than focus it in one person or governing body |
| unicameral | Having one house or chamber |
| supermajority | A majority that is greater than 50%, often much greater |
| central government | The level of government that deals with national matters |
| state government | The government responsible for matters affecting the people in a state that is not handled by the federal government |
| checks and balances | A system of government that gives each branch the power to check, or limit, the power of the other branches |
| suffrage | The right to vote |
| radical | Advocating for extreme political or social change, especially by challenging the foundations of a particular system |
| abolitionist | Someone who wants to end slavery |
| surveyor | a person whose job is to determine the size, shape, and boundaries of land |
