Unit 5 Chapter 10 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
confederation A loose alliance of countries, states, and other political units in which each unit maintains most or all power over itself
ratify To give formal approval to something so it can become legal or valid
decentralize To spread out power or control rather than focus it in one person or governing body
unicameral Having one house or chamber
supermajority A majority that is greater than 50%, often much greater
central government The level of government that deals with national matters
state government The government responsible for matters affecting the people in a state that is not handled by the federal government
checks and balances A system of government that gives each branch the power to check, or limit, the power of the other branches
suffrage The right to vote
radical Advocating for extreme political or social change, especially by challenging the foundations of a particular system
abolitionist Someone who wants to end slavery
surveyor a person whose job is to determine the size, shape, and boundaries of land
