Graphic Design combines images, symbols, and text to solve problems and convey a specific message to an audience.
Raster Made of pixels. Blurry when scaled up. Best for photos. (Adobe Photoshop).
Vector mathematical paths. Infinitely scalable. Best for logos/icons. (Adobe Illustrator).
Image-Based Design Focuses: The picture tells the story.
type-Based Design Focuses: The letterforms/words carry the message.
Image and Type Design Focuses: A hybrid balance of both (most common).
The 5 Elements (C.R.A.P.) Contrast (big/small, dark/light) to create interest. Repetition: consistent elements to create unity. Alignment: Connecting elements visually so they don't look random. Proximity: Grouping related items together to show relationship.
Logo Design & Branding A visual shorthand for identification, not explanation.
The 5 Golden Rules: Simple, Memorable, Timeless, Versatile, Appropriate.
Two Types of logos Descriptive: Shows what the company does. Symbolic: Uses abstract shapes to represent a "feeling."
5 step Process Discovery Brainstorm/Sketch Vectorize Refine Present.
Color Models: RGB: Additive (Light). Used for screens. CMYK: Subtractive (Ink). Used for print.
The "HVI" Properties: Hue: The name of the color. Value: Lightness vs. Darkness (Tint = +White, Shade = +Black, Tone = +Gray).
Color Schemes Monochromatic: One hue, different values. Complementary: Opposites on the wheel (High energy). Analogous: Neighbors on the wheel (Harmonious).
Psychology: Blue (Trust), Red (Urgency), Green (Nature), Red/Yellow (Hunger/Fast Food).
The "Lines" typography Baseline (floor), Mean line (x-height), Cap height (top of caps), Ascenders (up), Descenders (down).
Spacing: Tracking: Uniform space across a whole word/line. Kerning: Space between two specific letters.
Crimes: Widows and Orphans one word at end of paragraph one line at top of new page
Outlines: Converting text to shapes so it's portable and customizable.
Alignment Left (easiest to read), Right, Centered, and Justified (clean block).
Brochures hook (Front), logical flow (Panels), and a Call to Action (CTA).
Infographics: Characteristics: Data visualization, hierarchy, simplicity, and storytelling. Fonts: Usually clean Sans-Serif fonts for maximum legibility.
