Mali Powerful West African empire (1200's-1400's) became rich from gold and trade.
Sundiata The founder and first ruler of the Mali empire.
Mansa Musa Very wealthy emperor of Mali known for traveling to Mecca.
Songhai Kingdom A large West African empire that grew powerful after Mali.
Timbuktu A major trade and learning center in West Africa.
Mecca The holy city of Islam in Saudi Arabia where Muslims travel for pilgrimage. Mansa Musa also traveled here.
Trans Saharan Trade Trade routes connecting North and West Africa through the Sahara Desert.
Sahara Desert Largest and hottest desert in the world located in North Africa.
Oases Fertile areas in a desert where water is found.
Arabian Desert A large desert covering much of the Arabian Peninsula.
Camel saddle A saddle in which allows people to ride camels.
Gao An important capital and city of the Songhai dynasty.
Justinian A Byzantine emperor known for expanding the empire and creating Justinian laws.
Vladamir A ruler of Kieven where Christianity was the main religion.
Ibn Batuta A Muslim traveler from Morocco who journeyed across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
