A&P Chapter 1 S2

First "section" of A&P chapter 1 textbook vocabulary

TermDefinition
Anabolism Smaller, simpler molecules are combined into larger systems after consumption. This is how the body produces complex chemicals it needs to maintain itself
Catabolism The process by which larger molecules are broken down to become components in molecules the body needs. This releases energy
Metabolism The sum of all anabolic and catabolic functions of the body
Responsiveness The ability of an organism to adjust to internal and external changes
Movement The change in position of both the organism as a whole and also structures and cells within the organism (blood rushing throughout the body, lungs breathing)
Development A process of change within an organism to produce more complex structures and also maintain existing structures
Growth The increase in cellular count of an organism
Reproduction Producing offspring, preserving your species' continued existence
Oxygen Key component of chemical reactions that keep the body alive
Nutrients A substance in foods that the body needs to survive
Narrow Range of Temperature The small window of temperature at which the body can maintain homeostasis (98.6F, 37C)
Narrow Range of Atmospheric Pressure The small window of barometric pressure the human body can withstand
Set Point Physiological value around which the normal range fluctuates
Normal Point The restricted value that is optimal and sustainable for life
Negative Feedback Mechanism which reverses deviation from the set point
Positive Feedback A process by which the body intensifies a deviation in normal range
Sensor/Receptor Component of a feedback system that monitors a physiological value
Control Center Component of a feedback system that compares the value to the normal range
Effector Component of a feedback system that causes a change to reverse a situation and return the value to a normal range

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
