| Vocab Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Coefficient | The number that multiplies the variables in an algebraic term. If not number is specified, the coefficient is 1 |
| Congruent | Having the same size and shape |
| Domain | The set of inputs of a function |
| Exterior Angle | In a polygon, the supplementary angle of an interior angle |
| Function | A mathematical rule that identifies a relationship between two sets of numbers. Each number from the first set (an input) is used to calculate another number from the second set (an output). Each input produces only one input. |
| Hypotenuse | The longest side of a right triangle |
| Irrational Number | Numbers that cannot be expressed as a ratio of two integers. Their decimal expansions are nonending and nonrepeating. |
| Integer | The set of counting numbers, their opposites, and zero. |
| Like terms | Algebraic terms with identical variable factors |
| Legs of a Right Triangle | The two shorter sides of a right triangle that form a 90 degree angle at their intersection |
| Linear Pair | Two adjacent angles that together form a straight line |
| Origin | The location of the number 0 on a number line or 0,0 on a coordinate plane |
| Pythagorean Theorem | The area of a square constructed on a hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of a squares constructed on the legs of the right triangle expressed as formula |
| Radical expression | An expression that indicates the root of a number. It uses a radical sign. |
| Range | The difference between the greatest number and the least number in a set of data Or The set of outputs of a function |
| Rational Number | All numbers that can be written as a ratio of two integers |
| Real Numbers | All the numbers that can be represented by points on a number line |
| Relation | The pairing of two sets of data. Set notation, a table of pairs of values, an equation, or a graph can express a relation |
| Right Triangle | A triangle whose largest angle measures 90 degrees |
| Scalene Triangle | A triangle with three sides of different lengths. All three angles also have different measures |
| Scientific Notation | A method of writing a number as a product of a decimal number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10 |
| Similar | Having the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Corresponding part of similar figures are proportional |
| Slope | The number that represents the slant of the graphed line. The slope is the ratio of the rise to the run between any two points on the graph and indicates the rate of change |
| Supplementary Angles | Two angles whose measures total 180 degrees |
| Y intercept | is the point where a graph crosses the y-axis, with an x-coordinate of 0. |
| Acute Triangle | A triangle whose largest angle measures between o degrees and 90 degrees |
| Adjacent Angles | Two angles that have a common side and a common vertex but do not overlap. The angles lie on opposite sides of their common side |
| Area | The size of the surface of a flat shape. The area of a surface is measured in square units |
| Vertical Angles | are the pairs of angles that are opposite each other when two lines intersect, and they are always equal in measure. |
| Cube Root | One of three equal factors of a number |
| Counting numbers | The numbers used to count (1,2,3,4,5 ) Also called natural numbers |
| Dependent Variable | The variable in an equation whose value is determined by the value chosen for one or more other variables |
| Isosceles Triangle | A triangle with at least two sides of equal length. At least two angles of an isosceles triangle are also equal |
| Independent Variable | A variable (often x) whose variation does not depend on that of another |
| Obtuse Triangle | A triangle whose largest angle measures between 90 degrees and 180 degrees |
| Parallel Lines | Lines in the same plane that do not intersect. Parallel lines remain the same distance apart |
| sphere | A round geometric surface whose points are all an equal distance from its center |
| Volume | The amount of space a solid shape occupies. Volume is measured in cubic units |
| whole numbers | The members of the set ( 0,1,2,3,4,...) |
| X-Axis | The horizontal number of a coordinate plane |
| Y-Axis | The vertical line of a coordinate plane |
