After Romes republic, what government style did they switch to? Monarchy.
What did the Emperors ( Octavian ) in Rome do? Help bring about two centuries to peace.
What does "Pax Romana" mean? Roman peace.
Who took control of the Roman world? Octavian.
What name did Octavian switch to? Augustus.
What did Augustus do for ordinary people (Plebs)? Improved their life.
What did Augustus do to Romes army? Decrease the size of it and raise pay.
What did Rome still have after the Roman Republic died? A senate.
After Augustus died what happened? He was deified.
What does deified mean? To become a god.
Were Emperors able to become deified even if they were still alive? Yes.
Who became Emperor after Augustus died? His stepson, Tiberius.
What law was passed? The Emperor had almost full power.
What was a serious problem? Succession.
What city blew up because it was a volcano instead of a mountain? Pompeii.
What was Romes architecture like? They built buildings, great houses and even in everyday homes Doric columns, pillars.arches. and mosaic designs.
What were the Rome roads like? They designed paved roads that created networks, linking towns with big cities.
What is an aqueduct? A arch that channels water from one place to another.
What does Latin mean? A language that has influenced a lot of other languages today.
Who designed the twelve month calendar? Julius Caesar.
Who ran every household? The oldest man.
What were Women in charge of? All of the house duties.
What did the poor live in? Shabby houses.
What was the biggest entertainment? Gladiators.
What did the entertainment take place in? Colosseum or amphitheaters.
What did the entertainers had to fight for? Their lives.
By the end of Augustus' reign, what did Rome have control over? Egypt and Syria.
What was Romes economy focused on? Farming and trading.
Where did Rome sell their crops? Markets.
What did farmers pay their taxes with? Food.
What did the rich own many of? Properties and forced slaves to work on them.
When was the largest slave revolt? 73 BC.
What did Spartacus do? Broke out in South Italy, with many other slaves.
What did slaves do? Murdered their owners and caused fear to Rome.
What did Rome often do when it came to art? Copied the Greeks.
What did Rome do better than the Greeks with their sculptures? Made them more realistic, unlike the Greeks.
Who was Cicero, and what was he famous for? Cicero was famous for his speeches.
Were gladiators usually free or slaves? Slaves.
What was romance based on? Latin language.
How does Rome influence our world today? It influences our government and legal systems in many countries today.
What were the twelve tables? A written law.
What did the twelve tables change in Romes government system? They made it more reliable by writing down the laws
What would the people mostly watch for entertainment? Gladiators fight beasts.
Who were gladiators? Slaves or condemned crinimals.
What is the Civil law? The Civil law is a set of laws family property and tradition of the important issues.
What did Gladiators usually battle? Mostly people or animals.
Where were Gladiators trained? They were trained at a special Gladiator school.
What is the first principle of Roman law? Person presumed innocent until proven guilty.
What is the second principle of the Roman law? Accused people are allowed to defend themselves in front of a judge.
What is the third principle of the Roman law? Judge weighs all evidence before decision.
How was the life for a Roman slave? Harsh and tiring.
What was life like for a Roman gladiator? Hot and harsh.
What is a contract gladiator? If men came and picked you, then you would have to fight.
Why would someone want to be a gladiator? To pay off debt they owed or to be free.
How were the gladiators like family? They all went through the same thing.
What did a beast maker do? He trained animals to fight against gladiators.
Why might a beast maker be put to death? If the "beast" didn't do as told.
Why was Emperor Titus so determined to build the Colosseum and hold gladiator matches there? For his father.
What is Judahism? The religion of the Hebrews.
What are descendants? Children.
The first monotheistic religion was... Judaism.
How much people practiced Judaism? About 14 million people.
What did Jews oppose? The Roman Rule.
What did the Jews believed they should stop paying? Taxes.
What did the Pharisees believe? That if they were good people throughout their life, then they would be resurrected after the Messiah came.
What was Jesus' religion? Judaism/Jewish.
What were the stories that explained Jesus' life called? Gospels.
Why did the followers begin to think Jesus was the Messiah? He spoke out for the poor and the outcast.
What did Jesus do to the five pieces of bread and two fish? He did a miracle and made more for a starving crowd.
What did non-Jews who became Christian not follow all of? Jewish traditions and rules.
What did many Romans refuse to follow? Christianity.
Why were Christians hunted as criminals? Because they refused to believe in the Roman gods.
How were Christians promised Heaven? If you followed Jesus' teachings and lived a moral life.
Where would humans go if they believed in the Roman gods, and where would the gods be? Humans would be in the underworld and gods would be in heaven.
What was promised to everyone even if your status was low, if you were Christian? Eternal life.
What is the religion Christianity based on? The teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.
Who is the founder of Christianity? Jesus Himself.
Who was the Messiah? Leaded Jews and believed would return and restore the greatness of Israel.
What does the Holy Bible mean in Hebrews? Holy Book of Christianity.
What is the definition of crucifixion? A type of execution that involved being nailed to the cross.
What is the definition of resurrection? Christian belief that Jesus rose from the dead three days after his death.
What are disciples? Followers.
What are Apostles? The 12 disciples whom Jesus chose to receive special teachings.
Who is Paul of Tarsus? Disciple whose letters defined Christianity as separate from Judaism.
Who are Martyrs? People who die for their religious beliefs.
What does prosecution mean? Punishing people for their beliefs.
Who was Constantine? A Roman Emperor who became Christian.
What did Romans believe in? Many gods and goddessess.
What did Romans resent? Jews because they didn't worship the statues of Roman Emperors and Roman gods or goddesses.
Why were the Jews tired and angry? Because the Romans were making them pay high taxes.
What did the Jews do to Rome? Rebel against them.
What did the Roman army do the Jewish revolt? Crushed it and forced the Jews to leave.
What does internal mean? Inside.
What does external mean? Outside.
What was short during the Roman collapse? Food.
What spread during the Roman collapse? Diseases.
What happened to the taxes during the Roman collapse? They increased, to pay for defenders.
What was happening to the Roman Empire during collapse? It was to large to be ruled effectively.
What did Germans go to Rome for? Food and abandoned properties.
What did the German communities ignore? The Roman Empire.
What was happening to the North during the Roman collapse? Germans were starting to come in to attack.
Where did the Persian armies invade from? The East.
