| Songhai Kingdom | In the 1400s they had taken the place as the powerhouse in west Africa when Mali declined it became larger and richer than Mali |
| Timbuktu | Accumulated a lot of wealth and developed into centers of Muslim life in the region. It became a world-renowned center of Islamic learning. |
