Respitory system

TermDefinition
Asthma A chronic condition where airways become inflamed and narrow, causing wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.
Pneumothorax Air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall, causing the lung to collapse.
Pulmonary Fibrosis Lung tissue becomes scarred and stiff, making it harder to breathe.
Pulmonary Edema Fluid builds up in the lungs, making oxygen exchange difficult.
Hyperventilation Rapid or deep breathing that causes excessive loss of carbon dioxide.
Diffusion Movement of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) across the alveoli membranes from high to low concentration.
Inspiration The act of breathing air into the lungs.
Expiration The act of breathing air out of the lungs.
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths taken per minute.
Pulse Oximetry A test that measures oxygen saturation in the blood using a finger sensor.
Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) The fastest airflow during forced exhalation.
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Measurement of how quickly air can be exhaled from the lungs.
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) Amount of air exhaled in the first second of a forced breath.
Bronchodilator Medication that relaxes airway muscles and widens the airways (often used for asthma).
Nasal cavity Air enters; filters and warms air.
Pharynx Throat; passageway for air from nasal cavity to larynx.
Larynx Voice box; contains vocal cords.
Trachea Windpipe; tube connecting larynx to bronchi.
Bronchi Two main branches entering each lung.
Bronchioles Smaller airway branches inside the lungs.
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs.
Lungs Main organs of breathing.
Horizontal Fissure Separates right upper and right middle lobes.
Oblique Fissure Separates upper and lower lobes.
Diaphragm Main breathing muscle below the lungs.
Cartilaginous rings C-shaped rings in the trachea that keep the airway open.
Epiglottis Flap that closes over the trachea during swallowing to prevent food from entering the airway.
Conducting Zone Air passages that move air but do not exchange gases (nose → bronchioles).
Respiratory Zone Areas where gas exchange occurs (respiratory bronchioles, alveoli).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.
