Algebraic Thinking: Expressions, Equations and Inequalities

| algebraic expression | an expression with variables such as 3x - 4y + 2 |
| coefficient | a number that is multiplied by a variable |
| equation | a mathematical statement that uses an equal (=) sign to show that two expressions have the same value |
| equivalent expression | two or more expression in different forms that always name the same value |
| expression | a group of numbers, variables, and/or operation symbols that represent a mathematical relationship |
| factor (noun) | a number, or expression with parenthesis, that is multiplied |
| factor (verb) | to rewrite an expression as a product of factors |
| inequality | a mathematical statement that uses an inequality symbol to show the relationship between values or expressions |
| like terms | two or more terms that have the same variable factors |
| numerical expression | an expression without variables, such as 3 - 4 |
| product | the result of multiplication |
| rational number | a number that can be expressed as the fraction a/b where a and b are integers and b can not equal zero; they include integers, fractions, repeating decimals, and terminating decimals |
| solution of an inequality | a value that can be substituted for a variable to make an inequality true |
| term | a number, a variable, or the product of numbers, variables, and/or expressions; may include an exponent |
| unknown | the value you need to find to solve a problem |
| variable | a letter that represents an unknown number; in some cases it may represent or than one number |
