pule oximetry test that measures the amount of oxygen in the blood using small device on finger
peak expiratory flow fastest speed which a person can blow air out of their lungs
peak expiratory flow rate maximum speed of air leaving the lungs during forceful exhale
forced expiratory volume air a person can forcefully exhale in one second
bronchodilator medication that relaxes and opens the air ways to make breathing easier
upper respiratory tract part of respiratory system that includes the nose, nasel cavity, pharynx and larynx
lower respiratory tract trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs
larynx voice box helping produce sound keeping airways open
pharnyx the throat passageway for air and food
nasal cavity hollow space inside nose that filters, warms, and moistens air
bronchi two large tubes that carry air from the trachea into each lung
bronchioles smaller branches of bronchi that lead to alveoli
alveoli tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged
trachea the windpipe that carries air from larynx to the bronchi
lungs main organ of breathing where gas exchange happens
right superior lobe the top section of the right lung
right medial lobe the middle section of the right lung
right inferior lobe the bottom section of the right lung
left superior lobe the upper section of the left lung
left inferior lobe the lower section of the left lung
horizontal fissure a line that separates the right upper lobe from the right middle lobe
oblique fissure a diagonal line that separates lung lobes
diaphragm large muscle under the lungs that help control breathing
cartilaginous rings rings of cartilage around the trachea that keep airways open
epiglottis flap of tissue that closes over the trachea when swallowing to keep food out of the lungs
respiratory zone part of the lung where gas exchange occurs
conducting zone the airways that move air in and out of the lungs but do not exchange gases
