Exploration The act of traveling through an unfamiliar area to learn about it
Colonize To claim land for a nation by establishing a settlement
Rival A person who is competing for the same goal or object as another
Strait A narrow passage of water connecting two large bodies of water
Cartographer A person who makes maps
Imperialism A policy of extending a country power and influence through colonization, military force, or other means
Monarch The ruler in a government in which authority over the people is retained through a ruling family
Convert To change to something new or different
Missionary A person who works to spread their religious beliefs, often in a foreign country
Tribute Money or goods given to the ruler of a country, often in exchange or protection
Hereditary Passed on or transmitted from parent to child
Cash crop A crop grown for the purpose of selling it rather than consuming
Encomienda A grant given to a Spanish colonist that specifies a number of in indigenous people living in an area and authorizes the colonist to demand labor or tribute form those indigenous people
Empire An extensive group of states or countries under single supreme authority
Conquistador A soldier during the 16th and 17th centuries who defeated indigenous people in the American and took their land for Spain
Slave trade The capturing, transporting, selling, and buying of human being as salves
Mission A building or group of building used by a religious organization to spread its faith
Enslave To hold someone captive and force them to work without pay
Cultural diffusion The spread of people, ideas, technology, and products from one culture to another
Indigenous Native; original to a place
