Carney Speech Vocab

TermDefinition
Geopolitics: The study of how geography (location, resources, mountains, oceans) affects international politics and power.
Sovereignty: The supreme power or authority of a state to govern itself without outside interference.
Territorial Integrity: The principle that a nation's borders are sacred and should not be changed by force by another country.
Hegemony / Hegemons: A situation where one nation exerts dominant influence or control over others. A "Hegemon" is that dominant power.
Sea Lanes: Strategic maritime routes used for trade and military travel across the world's oceans.
Tariffs: Taxes imposed by a government on imported goods, usually to protect local industries.
Infrastructure: The basic physical systems of a country, such as roads, power grids, water systems, and telecommunications.
Rupture: A sudden, complete break or "split" in a relationship, agreement, or peaceful state.
Solidarity: Unity or agreement of feeling and action, especially among individuals with a common interest or cause.
Asymmetrically: Existing in an unequal way; when two sides are not balanced in power, size, or resources.
Leverage: The power to influence a person or situation to get what you want (often using a specific advantage).
Coercion: The practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.
Subordination: The act of placing someone in a lower rank or making them secondary to another person or group.
Autonomy: The right or condition of self-government; having the freedom to make your own choices.
Aphorism: A short statement that expresses a general truth or piece of wisdom (e.g., "Actions speak louder than words").
Rigour: The quality of being extremely thorough and accurate in thinking or work.
Rhetoric: The art of effective or persuasive speaking and writing, especially through the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.
