Life Science Vocab

TermDefinition
Cell The basic unit of life; all living things are made of cells.
Organism Any living thing, such as plants, animals, bacteria, or fungi.
Tissue A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
Organ A structure made of tissues that performs a specific job in the body, like the heart or lungs.
Organ System A group of organs that work together to carry out a major function, like the digestive system.
Photosynthesis The process plants use to make food using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
Cell Membrane The thin layer that surrounds a cell and controls what enters and leaves it.
Nucleus The part of a cell that controls its activities and contains genetic material (DNA).
Mitochondria The “powerhouse” of the cell that produces energy
Chloroplast A plant cell part that captures sunlight for photosynthesis
Organelle A small structure inside a cell that performs a specific job
Cytoplasm The jelly-like material inside a cell where organelles are found and many cell activities happen.
Cell Wall A strong outer layer that supports and protects plant cells
Vacuole A storage space in the cell that holds water, nutrients, or waste.
Ribosome A tiny cell structure that makes proteins for the cell
Unicellular An organism made of only one cell
Multicellular An organism made of many cells that work together
Diffussion The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis The movement of water across a cell membrane
Cellular Respiration The process cells use to release energy from food
