| Anaconda Plan | Mocking name given to the Union's Civil War strategy devised by Winfield Scott to slowly squeeze the Confederacy through blockading southern ports and controlling the Mississippi River |
| war of attrition | War strategy meant to wear out the opponent and exhaust its resources and will to fight |
| blockade runners | Low, fast ships built by the Confederacy to get past Union blockades |
| cotton diplomacy | Strategy to pressure England to recognize the independence of the Confederacy by withholding cotton |
