Asthma A condition where airways become inflamed and narrow making breathing difficult
Punctured Lung Air leaks into the chest cavity causing the lung to collapse
Pulmonary Fibrosis Scarring of lung tissue that makes breathing harder
Pulmonary Edema Fluid buildup in the lungs that makes it difficult to breathe
Hyperventilate Breathing too quickly or deeply lowing carbon dioxide in the blood
Diffusion Movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and blood
Inspiration Breathing air into the lungs
Expiration Breathing air out of the lungs
Respiratory Rate Number of breaths taken per minute
Pulse Oximetry A test that measures oxygen levels in the blood
Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) The fastest speed air can be forced out of the lungs
Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR) Measurement of how fast someone can exhale air
Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) Amount of air forcefully exhaled in one second
Bronchodilator medicine that relaxes airway muscles to improve breathing
Upper Respiratory Tract The part of the respiratory system that brings hair into the body
Larynx Voice box that contains vocal cords
Pharynx Throat passage for air from the nose to the larynx
Nasal cavity Space inside the nose that warms the filters air
Lower Respiratory Tract Airways that lead to the lungs where gas exchange occurs
Bronchi Two main tubes that carry air from the trachea into the lungs
Bronchioles Small branches of the bronchi inside the lungs
Alveoli Tiny air sacs where oxygen an carbon dioxide are exchanged
Trachea Windpipe that carries air from the throat to the bronchi
Lungs Organs that allow gas exchange between air and blood
Right Superior Lobe (right upper) Upper section of the right lung
Right Medial Lobe (Right Middle) Middle section of the right lung
Right Inferior Lobe (right lower) Bottom section of the right lung
Left Inferior Lobe (Left Lower) Bottom section of the left lung
Horizontal Fissure Line separating the upper and middle lobes of the right lung
Oblique Fissure Line separating lung loves diagonally
Diaphragm Muscle under the lungs that helps control breathing
Cartilaginous Rings C- shaped rings that keep the trachea open
Epiglottis Flap that closes over the trachea when swallowing to keep food out
Respiratory zone Area of the lungs where gas exchange occurs
Conducting zone Airways that move air to the lungs bud do not exchange gases
Left Superior Lobe (left lower) Upper section of the left lung
