What is militarism? The belief that a country should build a strong military and be ready to use it.
What is nationalism? Strong pride and loyalty to one’s country.
What is imperialism? When countries compete to control colonies and resources.
What is an alliance? An agreement between countries to protect and support each other.
What type of fighting was common on the Western Front? Trench warfare.
What was trench warfare? Soldiers fought from long ditches (trenches) dug into the ground.
What was no man’s land? The dangerous area between enemy trenches.

What was the Zimmermann Telegram? A secret German message asking Mexico to join the war against the U.S.

What treaty officially ended the war? The Treaty of Versailles (1919).

What organization was created to keep peace after WWI? The League of Nations.
Black Hand A Serbian nationalist secret society that wanted to unite all Slavic people. A member of the Black Hand helped assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which triggered WWI.
Schlieffen Plan Germany’s military plan to quickly defeat France first, then fight Russia. Germany planned to invade France through Belgium, which caused Britain to enter the war
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare A German naval strategy during World War I where submarines (U-boats) attacked any ships in enemy waters without warning, including civilian and merchant ships. This angered many countries and helped lead the United States to enter the war in 1917.
Gavrilo Princip A Serbian nationalist who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 in Sarajevo. His actions triggered the chain of events that started World War I.
The Big Four The four leaders who met at the Paris Peace Conference after WWI to decide how to end the war and punish Germany. They were Woodrow Wilson (USA), David Lloyd George (Britain), Georges Clemenceau (France), and Vittorio Orlando (Italy).
Poison Gas A chemical weapon used in World War I that caused burning lungs, blindness, and death. It was one of the new technologies that made the war more deadly and led to the use of gas masks by soldiers.
Zimmermann Telegram A secret message sent by Germany to Mexico in 1917 asking Mexico to join the war against the United States. When the U.S. discovered it, it helped convince Americans to enter World War I.
