TermDefinition
Asteroid A small rocky body orbiting the sun.
Asteroid Belt A large, donut-shaped section between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
Celestial Object Any naturally occurring, physically obvious structure existing in the observable universe outside of Earth's atmosphere.
Comet A celestial object including a nucleus of ice and dust.
Crater A large, bowl-shaped hole in the ground or on the surface of a planet or the moon, typically caused by an explosion.
Galaxy A system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravity.
Gaseous Relating to or having the characteristics of a gas
Meteor A small body of matter from outer space that enters the earth's atmosphere. Looks like a streak of light.
Meteorite A meteor that strikes earth's ground
Meteoroid A small body moving in the solar system that would become a meteor if it entered the earth's atmosphere.
Orbit The regular, curved path one object takes around another due to gravity,
Planet A large body that orbits a star, has enough weight to become nearly round due to its own gravity.
Reflectivity Reflecting light or radiation.
Relative Dating Determining the order of past events, fossils, or rock layers without calculating their exact age.
Solar System Is a star (like our Sun) and everything that orbits it due to gravity, including planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and dust, all traveling together through space.
Apparent brightness  The measured brightness of a celestial object (like a star) as it appears from Earth.
Absolute brightness Ia measure of an object's true brightness.
