| System | A set of interacting organisms that work together to form a whole |
| Subsystem | One organism that joins and works with other organisms to create a whole |
| Food chain | The flow of energy in an ecosystem |
| Food web | A complex interconnected network of multiple food chains showing how energy is passed on from living organism to living organism |
| Producer | A living organism that makes its own food using photosynthesis (plants) |
| Consumer | A living organism that eats other living organisms (Plants, animals, bugs) |
| Predator | A living organism that hunts and kills its prey (animals) |
| Decomposers | Living organisms that eat dead organisms (bugs, bacteria, fungi) |
| Dead plants and animals | Animals and plants that are dead |
| Community | When a group of animal species live and interact together in a specific place at the same time |
| Biotic | A living component of an ecosystem (plants, animals, bacteria) |
| Abiotic | Non-living components of an ecosystem (sunlight, water, temperature) |
