| Felony | Punishable by death or confinement no less than one year |
| Misdemeanor | punishable by a fine or confinement by less than one year |
| malum in se | inherently evil crimes |
| Malum prohibitum | wrong only because a statue that states it is a crime |
| Retribution | an eye for an eye |
