| Drug-Resistant Organisms | Pathogens that no longer respond to standard antibiotic therapy |
| Incomplete Dosing | Stopping antibiotics early increases resistance risk. |
| Broad-spectrum Antibiotic | Used before culture resutls are known for moderate to severe infections. |
| Narrow-Spectrum Antibiotic | Switched to once the specific organism is identified. |
| CCultrue and sensitivity | Test that identifies the organims and the best antibiotic to treat it. |
| Hyperseitivity reaction | Immune response causing rash, itching, or swelling. |
| Facial and trunk rash | Common sign of anti-infection hypersensitivity. |
| Medication Allergy | Immune-mediated reaction that requires stopping the drug. |
| Penicillin Allergy | Allergy to one penicilling means allergy to the entire class. |
| Nephrotoxicity | Kidney damage caused by medications. |
| Creatinine Clearance (CrCl) | Best indicator used to adjust dosing in renal impairment. |
| eGFR | Estimate of kidney filtering ability |
| Older Adult Renal Risk | Pateints 75+ need kidney labs monitored when on cephalosporins |
| Tendon Rupture | Serious risk with fluroquinolones, especially in older adults. |
| Peripheral Neuropathy | Nerve damage causing numbness or tingling. |
| Photosensitivity | Sun sensitivity caused by tetracylines, sulfa, and ciprofloxacin. |
| Avoid Antacids | Needed with ciprofloxacin and tetracyclines to ensure absorption. |
| Decreased Urine Output | Warning sign of nephrotoxicity. |
| Ototoxicity | Inner ear damge affecting hearing and balance |
| Tinnitus | Ringing in the ears-early sign of ototoxicity |
| Peak Level | Measured after a dose to assess effectiveness |
| Sivler Sulfadiazine | Topical antimicrobial used for burns. |
| Vancomycin Red Man Syndrome | Caused by rapide IV infusion-prevent by infusing over 1 hour |
| Resistance | Caused by not finishing antibiotics |
| Overprescribing | Too many unnecessary antibiotics |
| Leftovers | Using old antibiotics incorrectly |
| Sensitivity | Test to find effective antibiotic |
| Cross-reactivity | Penicillin allergy applies to whole class |
| Culture | Sample grown to identify pathogen |
| Osteoxicity | Tetracycline tooth/bone effects in children |
