Arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
Arterioles Small branches of arteries that lead to capillaries.
Capillaries Tiny blood vessels where oxygen, nutrients, and wastes are exchanged between blood and tissues.
Venules Small blood vessels that collect blood from capillaries and carry it to veins.
Veins Blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Valves Flaps inside veins that prevent blood from flowing backward.
Histology The study of tissues under a microscope.
Tunica Externa The outer layer of a blood vessel that protects and supports it.
Tunica Media The middle layer of a blood vessel made mostly of smooth muscle, which controls vessel diameter.
Tunica Interna The inner lining of a blood vessel that is smooth so blood can flow easily.
Lumen the open space inside a blood vessel where blood flows.
Pulmonary Circulation The movement of blood between the heart and the lungs to pick up oxygen.
Systemic Circulation The movement of blood between the heart and the rest of the body.
Right Atrium Upper right chamber of the heart that receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle that prevents backflow of blood.
Right Ventricle Lower right chamber that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Pulmonary Semilunar (Pulmonic) Valve Valve between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery that stops blood from flowing backward.
Pulmonary Artery Blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Veins that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Left Atrium Upper left chamber that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs
Bicuspid (Mitral) Valve Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle that prevents backflow.
Left Ventricle Lower left chamber that pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Aortic Semilunar (Aortic) Valve Valve between the left ventricle and the aorta that prevents blood from flowing back into the heart.
Aorta The largest artery that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the body.
Chordae Tendineae Strong tendon-like cords that connect valves to papillary muscles and keep valves from flipping backward.
Septum The wall that separates the right and left sides of the heart.
Trabeculae Carneae Irregular muscular ridges inside the ventricles of the heart.
Papillary Muscles Muscles in the ventricles that tighten the chordae tendineae to hold valves in place.
Apex The pointed bottom tip of the hear
Base The upper part of the heart where major blood vessels attach.
Left Coronary Artery (Left Main) Main coronary artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending (LAD) Coronary Artery Branch of the left coronary artery that supplies the front of the left ventricle and septum.
Circumflex Artery Branch of the left coronary artery that supplies the side and back of the left side of the heart.
Right Coronary Artery Coronary artery that supplies blood to the right side of the heart and parts of the conduction system.
Carotid Artery Major artery in the neck that supplies blood to the brain, neck, and face.
Descending Aorta The part of the aorta that travels downward through the chest and abdomen, sending blood to the lower body.
Subclavian Artery Artery that supplies blood to the shoulders, arms, and upper chest.
Brachiocephalic Trunk Large artery from the aorta that splits into the right common carotid and right subclavian arteries.
Axillary Artery Artery in the armpit region that continues blood flow to the arm.
Brachial Artery Main artery of the upper arm.
Radial Artery Artery on the thumb side of the forearm, commonly used to check the pulse.
Ulnar Artery Artery on the pinky side of the forearm that helps supply the hand.
Iliac Artery Artery that branches from the aorta to supply blood to the pelvis and legs.
Femoral Artery Major artery of the thigh that supplies blood to the lower limb
Popliteal Artery Artery located behind the knee.
Dorsalis Pedis (DP) Artery on the top of the foot used to check circulation in the foot.
Posterior Tibial (PT) Artery that runs behind the ankle and supplies the bottom of the foot.
Jugular Vein Major vein in the neck that carries blood from the brain, face, and neck back to the heart.
Brachiocephalic Vein Large vein that returns blood from the head, neck, and arms to the superior vena cava.
Subclavian Vein Vein under the collarbone that drains blood from the arm.
Axillary Vein Vein in the armpit area that carries blood from the arm toward the heart.
Greater Cephalic Vein Superficial vein on the thumb side of the arm that helps drain blood from the arm.
Median Cubital Vein Vein in the front of the elbow, commonly used for drawing blood.
Basilic Vein Superficial vein on the pinky side of the arm that drains blood from the arm.
Iliac Vein Vein that drains blood from the legs and pelvis into the inferior vena cava.
Femoral Vein Major vein in the thigh that carries blood from the leg back toward the heart.
Popliteal Vein Vein located behind the knee.
